The Bluff Technique™ — Advanced Muscle Reconstruction in Los Angeles

Most people who walk through the doors of The Bluff Technique Healing Center in Westwood, Los Angeles have already tried everything else. They have been through physical therapy, chiropractic adjustments, cortisone injections, and in many cases, surgery. Some have had multiple surgeries. They are still in pain. They are still limited. And they are starting to believe that this is just how their body is now.
It is not.
The Bluff Technique™ — formally known as Advanced Muscle Reconstruction (AMR™) — is a proprietary manual therapy system developed by Jimmy Bluff over more than 20 years of clinical practice, research, and direct work with some of the most demanding bodies in the world: professional athletes, Mr. Olympia competitors, Hollywood performers, military veterans, and post-surgical patients whose conventional care had reached a dead end.
The premise is simple. The execution is precise. The results are structural.
What Is Advanced Muscle Reconstruction (AMR™)?
AMR™ is a whole-body fascial intervention that works with the connective tissue system — the fascia — at its deepest structural layers. Unlike standard massage or even conventional myofascial release, AMR™ does not target isolated muscles or pressure points. It engages the continuous fascial web that surrounds and connects every structure in the body, applying sustained, no-force engagement that allows restrictions to release at their root rather than simply masking symptoms at the surface.
The National Library of Medicine's StatPearls reference describes fascia as layered connective tissue that can transmit mechanical tension generated by muscle activity or outside forces. When this matrix becomes restricted — through trauma, surgery, postural collapse, inflammation, or accumulated stress — it generates compressive forces that conventional imaging often fails to detect and conventional treatment rarely resolves.
AMR™ resolves them.
The technique works across five interconnected tissue layers:
- Superficial fascia — the subcutaneous layer governing mobility and fluid dynamics
- Deep structural fascia — the dense fibrous sheaths encasing muscles and transmitting mechanical load
- Visceral fascia — the connective tissue suspending and protecting the internal organs, which profoundly affects posture and pelvic mechanics
- Periosteal fascia — the connective tissue layer adhered directly to bone, often the source of deep, unresolved joint pain
- Craniosacral membranes — the dural system connecting the skull to the sacrum, governing nervous system tension and whole-body mechanical balance
No other single approach addresses all five. AMR™ does.
How The Bluff Technique Differs from Other Manual Therapies
The manual therapy landscape is crowded. Swedish massage, deep tissue, trigger point therapy, Rolfing, Feldenkrais, standard John F. Barnes myofascial release, Active Release Technique — each has its place. Most address one layer of the problem.
The Bluff Technique™ is different in four key ways.
No force. AMR™ does not push, compress, or force tissue. It meets the tissue at its barrier and sustains engagement until the tissue releases voluntarily. This is why clients who have been hurt by aggressive manual therapy — or who have been told their pain is "too complex" to treat — respond so well.
Structural, not symptomatic. Every AMR™ session is guided by postural assessment and functional movement screening. Jimmy is not chasing pain. He is reading the architectural story your body is telling and correcting the structure. Pain relief is the outcome of structural correction, not the target of surface intervention.
Whole-body sequencing. A frozen shoulder is rarely just a shoulder problem. Sciatica is rarely just a lumbar problem. AMR™ maps the fascial chain from origin to insertion and addresses the full sequence — which is why outcomes are lasting rather than temporary.
Integrated mind-body approach. Maria Bluff's Jungian-informed somatic coaching is woven into the AMR™ framework at the certification level, recognizing that, as MedlinePlus notes, psychological factors such as mood and stress can make chronic pain worse.

Frequently Asked Questions — The Bluff Technique™
What makes The Bluff Technique different from regular myofascial release?
Standard myofascial release protocols — most commonly the John F. Barnes method — primarily address the superficial and deep fascial layers. AMR™ works across all five fascial layers including visceral, periosteal, and craniosacral tissue, using a whole-body structural sequencing approach rather than isolated regional treatment.
Is The Bluff Technique painful?
No. AMR™ is a no-force technique. Sessions involve sustained, gentle engagement with the tissue — not the aggressive pressure associated with deep tissue massage or Rolfing. Most clients describe sessions as deeply relaxing with moments of profound release.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends entirely on the complexity and chronicity of your condition. Acute presentations may resolve in 3–5 sessions. Long-standing, multi-layered structural issues typically require a 10–15 session protocol. Jimmy will give you an honest assessment after your initial evaluation.
Is AMR™ available outside of Los Angeles?
Yes. Jimmy offers nationwide concierge sessions and hosts Bluff Academy workshops in cities across the country throughout the year.
Can The Bluff Technique help after surgery?
Yes — and this is one of its most powerful applications. See our dedicated post-surgical recovery page for the full protocol.
