The Bluff Technique Healing Center is a myofascial release practice at 1385 Westwood Blvd in West Los Angeles. Jimmy Bluff works with two groups and gives them equal attention: athletes recovering from training loads and people living with chronic pain. Clients come to the Westwood studio from across the Westside and beyond. If you prefer privacy or can't easily travel, you can book concierge in-home and hotel sessions anywhere in Los Angeles and in other cities nationwide.

What Myofascial Release Means at The Bluff Technique Healing Center

Fascia is the connective tissue that wraps and links muscles, bones, nerves and organs. National Library of Medicine references describe it as active tissue. According to StatPearls (NCBI Bookshelf), fascia "can transmit mechanical tension generated by muscular activity or external forces." Deep fascia also contains many sensory nerves. That is one reason restricted fascia can change how movement feels, sometimes far from the restriction itself.

The Bluff Technique™, also called Advanced Muscle Reconstruction (AMR™), is Jimmy Bluff's own approach to myofascial release therapy. It uses no force. The practitioner holds a sustained engagement that works through one fascial layer after another, and the work is sequenced across the whole body instead of chasing the spot that hurts. Depending on the structural assessment, a session may start at the feet to address neck tension, or at the ribcage to address low-back pain.

Research on myofascial release is promising but still developing. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis indexed in PubMed Central based its overall analysis on 78 effect sizes from 10 randomized trials. It concluded that myofascial release "had a moderate effect on ROM performance in athletes when compared to the active or passive control groups." The evidence on chronic pain is more mixed. A 2021 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Medicine (Xu et al.) found modest gains in pain and function for chronic low back pain, but "no significant effects on ... mental health, and quality of life." Many clients report meaningful changes in comfort and mobility. The work is meant to complement medical care, not replace it.

Concierge Sessions Throughout Los Angeles and Nationally

Not everyone can, or wants to, come to Westwood. Concierge outcall sessions bring the full Bluff Technique protocol to your home, office, hotel suite or training facility. They are popular with touring performers, busy executives, athletes in season, and clients early in post-surgical recovery who have medical clearance. Concierge sessions are also available outside California.

What to Expect at Your First Session

Your first visit starts with a conversation about your history, your goals and any medical guidance you've received. Next comes a standing and movement assessment. Jimmy then works through the relevant fascial layers with sustained, no-force engagement and explains what he finds as he goes. Most clients leave with a few simple self-care suggestions. If you have a diagnosed condition, recent surgery, or symptoms such as numbness, weakness or unexplained pain, please check with your physician first.

Frequently Asked Questions — Myofascial Release in Los Angeles

Where is The Bluff Technique Healing Center located?

The studio is at 1385 Westwood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024, south of Wilshire Boulevard in Westwood. It is convenient to UCLA, Bel Air, Brentwood, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica. If you'd rather be treated at home or in a hotel, concierge sessions are available throughout Los Angeles.

What is the difference between myofascial release and deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage usually uses firm pressure on specific muscles. Myofascial release, as practiced in The Bluff Technique™, uses sustained, no-force engagement to work through layers of connective tissue, and it treats the body as one connected structure. Many clients find it less painful than deep tissue work, though it can still feel intense.

Do you offer in-home myofascial release in Los Angeles?

Yes. Concierge in-home and hotel sessions are available across Los Angeles, including Bel Air, Malibu, Beverly Hills, Pasadena and Sherman Oaks, and nationally by arrangement. They use the same assessment and protocol as studio visits.

Is myofascial release safe for chronic pain?

For most people, gentle myofascial release from a trained practitioner carries low risk. The NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that "the risk of harmful effects from massage therapy appears to be low." If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or have had recent surgery, talk to your doctor first.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your history, your goals and how your body responds. Some clients notice changes after one session. Long-standing patterns usually need a series of sessions, and Jimmy will suggest a plan after your first assessment.
